It Didn't Start as a Workout. It Started as Rehabilitation.

Joseph Pilates developed his method — which he called "Contrology" — in the early 20th century, refining it while working with immobilized patients during World War I, and later publishing his philosophy in Return to Life Through Contrology in 1945. His core belief wasn't about aesthetics or calorie burn. It was that the mind should have complete, deliberate control over the body, and that most people move through life using only a fraction of their actual musculature — compensating with the same overworked muscles for everything, while genuinely important stabilizing muscles go quiet.

That's the first reason Pilates feels different: it isn't designed to let you use your strongest, most obvious muscles to muscle through a movement. It's designed to interrupt that habit.

Pilates himself wrote about many of these ideas throughout his work, but the tidy "six principles" framing that gets repeated everywhere is a later synthesis, not a direct quote.

This matters for two reasons. First, it's a small signal of how much Pilates content online is repeated without anyone checking the original source. Control and Precision: Why Slow Isn't a Difficulty Setting, It's the Exercise

In most strength training, moving a weight faster (within reason) doesn't necessarily make the exercise harder — often it makes it easier, because momentum starts doing some of the work for you. Pilates removes that shortcut deliberately. Every rep is meant to be executed with total control, at a pace slow enough that no momentum is assisting you, with precise attention to where each part of your body is in space.

Trying to consciously think about six separate principles during a workout is overwhelming, and it defeats the purpose. In the spirit of not overselling this: Pilates is genuinely well-evidenced for improving postural control, core and trunk strength, flexibility, and body awareness.
